How do I keep my private number plate when I sell my vehicle on Car-Ma?
If you want to keep your private number plate while selling your car on Car-Ma, you can do so by putting your private plate on retention.
How to start the process:
- Visit the government website: Apply for an alternative registration for your vehicle.
- Re-assignment: Your vehicle usually reverts to its original registration number.
Next step:
- You’ll receive a new V5C logbook and a V778 form, proving you have the right to assign your private plate to another vehicle for the next 10 years.
- Cost: This process costs £80 (as of now).
How long does it take to get a new V5C logbook?
- Online: Typically takes 3-5 working days.
- Via Post: This can take up to 8 weeks.
Can you start selling your vehicle before completing this process?
You must wait until the private plate retention and securing a different vehicle registration process is complete before continuing your sale. If you’ve started profiling your vehicle on the Car-Ma website, you can save your progress and continue later.
What to do once the process is finished:
- Upload the first 3 pages of your new V5C logbook to your profile.
- Upload a copy of your driving licence.
To avoid delays, ensure that your photos clearly show the entire document, including all four corners and the text.
